When you’re struggling, it can be hard to know where to turn or what to do next. Feeling lost or unsure about how to get help can be overwhelming, especially when emotions are running high.
If you’re having suicidal thoughts, try to take a moment to recognise what kind of support you need right now, you don’t have to face it alone.
Helping someone else
When someone you care about is struggling, it can be difficult to know where to start or how best to help. They may feel lost or unsure where to turn, especially when emotions are intense.
If they’re experiencing suicidal thoughts, helping them find the right support at the right time can make all the difference.
Consider the below and what course of action you should take in this instance.
If you feel in any way that there is a risk to your life, either you have taken action to end your life or you feel overwhelmed with suicidal thoughts, you need emergency assistance.
Do not hesitate – call 999 for an ambulance.
If you, or someone close to you, requires emergency help then please contact any of the below.
Telephone
- Dial 999 if your life, or the life of someone you know, is in immediate risk.
- Dial 111 if you need medical help quickly, but it’s not an immediate risk, or if it is out-of-hours for your General Practitioner (GP) surgery.
- Call Samaritans free on 116 123 – they are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
- Call CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) if you’re a male in the UK who needs to talk or find support, on 0800 58 58 58 (5pm–midnight, 365 days a year).
- Contact SOBS – Survivors of bereavement by Suicide – National Helpline 7 days a week 9am -9pm call 0300 111 5065
- Call Northamptonshires NHFT Mental Health Hub 0800 448 0828 (open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year) – (Northants Residents Only)
Face : Face Support
For Adults – Crisis Cafés are available for anyone aged 17 years & 6 months or over who are finding themselves in a crisis or need support with their mental health. There is no need to call and book an appointment, simply drop in to one of the Northamptonshire locations listed to receive support.
For Younger people aged 11-18, plus parents and carers, Northamptons Lowdown, and Kettering Youthworks collaboratively run wellbeing cafes for in Northampton, Kettering and Corby – Check their website for further details. https://thelowdown.info/crisis-support/
Text Service
Crisis Messaging service (Shout, Young Minds, The Mix) = text either YM or THEMIX to 85258. This is a free, confidential, 24/7 text support service. It’s a place to go if you’re struggling to cope and need mental health support.
If you are concerned about someone else showing signs of mental distress, remember to approach gently and quietly, providing reassurance that you want to help and support them. If you have a reason to think that the person may hurt themselves or others, do not approach them, and instead contact professionals, such as calling 999 and asking for an ambulance. contact any of the below
